March 1st we started a 3+ month tour in Northern California heading south, then east, and then north back home. We'd love company, so come join us for a section!
A nice long stroll to the beach, some more beautiful flowers and birds, and a desire to find out more about the Monterey Trench - anyone out there with more computing power and internet than I have here in this tent, in the rain, with my phone? Anyone? Bueller?
Monterey Bay is probably the single most important geographic feature of this part of the central California coast. Just offshore from the Monterey Peninsula, the Monterey Submarine Canyon bisects Monterey Bay, plunging to 6000 ft. and providing a cold-water upwelling rich in nutrients supporting unusually abundant food for seabirds. The nearshore presence of a deep-water canyon within a semi-protected bay is unmatched anywhere in North America and permits superb pelagic birding within a few miles of land. It is only about 25 miles across the mouth of the Bay from Lighthouse Pt., Santa Cruz, to Pt. Pinos in Pacific Grove From:http://creagrus.home.montereybay.com/MtyBay.html

Thank you!
ReplyDeleteAnd we saw tons of whales today - I assume the cold water upwelling may very likely help them too, on their way from Baja to AK.
If I am not mistaken, years ago I saw a short underwater video segment on the Monterey Trench showing a river of sand flowing down it...
Sounds like it is one huge feeding ground for the whales. Been reading lots about the area, sounds fascinating.
