It must have been that gas station cheeseburger or ...

Ugh! We are both feeling sick today. I am too tired to ride today, so we are staying 2 nights at Tishomingo SP.

Riding the parkway, we don't have the convenience of towns and gas stations to stock up on calories. We are sometimes at the mercy of the one store close to the parkway, or bike off route for better selections. The last two days we ended up at stores close to the parkway and just ate whatever they had. The first was fried chicken and catfish, yesterday's was cheeseburgers that had probably been sitting out all day. In our defense, in both cases there wasn't much choice in terms of food. In hind site maybe we should have biked further off route, but that's easier said than done. So today I'm paying for it, recovering thanks to good weather and a beautiful place to spend the day, and Greg's grocery trip into town to buy real food.

  1. Last time (post-questionable fried chicken and catfish) I naively set off on "a 3 mile cruise" to the "service station" after the one 800 yards away was closed (on Sundays). Coupla hundred yards into that ride and 3 big dogs are chasin' me, includin' some kinda Great Dane/pitbull mutant. That dog made the two black lab sized dogs with him look small! And after 3 miles, and at least a dozen dogs later...the East Indian Hindu woman at the counter made fun of me for not knowin' that you can't buy beer on Sundays in Lee County, MS. I averted my gaze when I saw a white woman buyin' illicit drugs from two black guys in her parking lot, what with me being so alone and spandex clad and all.
Today's jaunt was much more pleasant; merely 2 dogs, and they only came out after me on the return trip, and half-heartedly at that. Nice grocery store too.
The only bummer is that they sold cold beer, and on the day and time I was in there; but given the digestive rumblin's goin' on - I was none too interested...
    Maybe next week?

  2. Tell us a PO Box and we'll send you a care package, some home made cookin' in a box, just like when you were in college in some far away place...beer wouldn't be cold though...Alternatively, sometimes as I have approached the end of long journeys, I have begun to plan an elaborate several course meal from beginning to end, appetizers, salads, spices, meat, beer, wine, ice cream, etc. When it's just a day long cold bike ride, I start planning elaborate pieces of peanut butter toast, with bananas and jam and raisins, which I create and then eat it while in the bubble bath. The onset of these fantasies usually means it's time to rest up. Perhaps this is the wrong conversation for you guys now. Reed's ginger ale is always a palatable comfort for a ruined gut.
